Minutes of the ISBA General Assembly Meeting - June 4, 1998

Agenda:

1. Welcome

The President Susie Bayarri welcomed about 50-60 participants to the meeting and opened the proceedings.

2. Reports of the Executive Secretary and Treasurer

The Executive Secretary Mike Evans gave a report concerned with this website. He invited suggestions for improvements and asked that particpants have a link placed on their unit's home page to raise the profile of the site.

The Executive Secretary also reported for the Treasurer who was unable to attend. Currently ISBA has about 300 members with more to be added as memberships are still being processed. Currently ISBA has about $22,000 in the bank with more to be added with the processing of some additional memberships. It was noted that ISBA has benefited from support from Carnegie Mellon University, University of Chicago and University of Toronto.

3. Obituary for E. Jaynes

Professor Larry Bretthorst read an obituary for Professor E. Jaynes. It is intended that this appear in the next newsletter.

4. Award and Thanks

Professor Steve Fienberg noted that the following awards were being given by the ISBA and read the citations.

Certificate of Appreciation for Carlos Rodriguez

"In thanks for his service as ISBA's first Webmaster, and especially for his efforts in establishing ISBA's homepage and giving ISBA the means to communicate effectively with its members."

Founder's Award for Arnold Zellner

"In deep appreciation for his unflagging enthusiasm and irrepressible spirit, his zealous advocacy of the Bayesian method, his profound Bayesian research contributions, his outreach to researchers and statistical groups around the world, and especially his leadership of the Bayesian movement as the founding President of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis."

5. Report from Program Committee on Future Meetings and ISBA 2000

The Program Chair Mark Steel gave an extensive report on the meeting activities of ISBA both in the past and for the future. It was noted that ISBA World meetings will be held every 4 years and alternate every 2 years with the Valencia meetings. It was noted that the next World Meeting will be held in Crete and will be co-sponsored by Eurostat and partly devoted to government statistics.

Professor George Kokolakis reported on the begining arrangements for the World Meeting in Crete.

6. Report from Board of Directors Meeting, May 30, 1998

Professor Susie Bayarri summarized this meeting. The main points were: we intend to maintain a quarterly schedule nor the Newsletter, a Publications Committee will be appointed by the President to examine and report back to the board within a year on journals, proceedings and archives, a Nominations Committee is being chaired by Steve Fienberg to draft a list of candidates (see News for membership of the Nominating Committee) for the next election in the fall and the list of candidates will be posted on the web-site by July 22, 1998.

7. Ruegos y Preguntas (Questions and Queries)

Questions were taken from the floor. A query was made concerning the possibility of obtaining more student support for participation in ISBA meetings and it was noted that this issue is being examined. Also a query was made concerning the status of an archive and it was noted that this is being examined by the Publications Committee. It was requested that the webmaster send out notification to ISBA members of major updates to the website.
