News and Announcements

  1. November 16, 2005 - Nominations sought for the 2006 Mitchell Prize

The Mitchell Prize committee invites nominations for the 2006 Mitchell Prize. The Prize is currently awarded every other year in recognition of an outstanding paper that describes how a Bayesian analysis has solved an important applied problem. The Prize is jointly sponsored by the ASA Section on Bayesian Statistical Science (SBSS), the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (ISBA), and the Mitchell Prize Founders' Committee, and consists of an award of $1000 and a commemorative plaque. The 2006 Prize selection committee members are Tony O'Hagan (chair), Dave Higdon and Marina Vannucci.

The Mitchell Prize is named after Toby J. Mitchell and was established by his friends and colleagues following his death from leukemia in 1993. Toby was a Senior Research Staff Member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory throughout his career, with leaves of absence spent at the University of Wisconsin and at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Toby won the Snedecor Award in 1978 (with co-author Bruce Turnbull), made incisive contributions to statistics, especially in biometry and engineering applications, and was a marvelous collaborator and an especially thoughtful scientist. Toby was a dedicated Bayesian, hence the focus of the prize.

Eligible papers for the 2006 Prize must have appeared in a refereed journal or conference proceedings during the years 2003, 2004 or 2005. The selection committee strongly encourages electronic submissions of the papers being nominated. Entries must be sent to:

    Anthony O'Hagan
    Professor of Statistics
    Department of Probability and Statistics
    University of Sheffield
    Hicks Building
    Sheffield S3 7RH
    UK
    E-mail: a.ohagan@sheffield.ac.uk

Entries must be received by 1 February, 2006. Authors may nominate themselves. The award will be presented at the 2006 Valencia Meeting.

A Complete entry consists of the following:

    - Electronic file of the paper (.ps, .pdf or .doc) being nominated. Alternatively, 4 copies of the manuscript or reprint should be sent via post.

    - A brief statement by the nominator describing the impact of the work.

    - Names of two evaluators, not the nominator or coauthors, who are willing and able to credibly evaluate the usefulness of the work from the perspective of the applied field addressed in the paper as distinct from providing comments on its statistical merit.

    - Contact information for nominee, nominator (if different) and evaluators noted above.

Complete details about the Prize and the nomination process are provided in the Mitchell Prize Charter that can be obtained from the International Society for Bayesian Analysis website under ISBA awards. Note that the guidelines for the 2006 Mitchell Prize are slightly different than previous years.

  2. November 14, 2005 - The 2006 DeGroot Prize: Call for Entries

  10. November 23, 2004 - Progic2005

Progic2005: second workshop on Combining Probability and Logic
    special focus: Objective Bayesianism

Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science, London School of
    Economics, 6th-8th July 2005

    http://personal.lse.ac.uk/willia11/progic2005/

You are invited to submit a paper for presentation at the workshop and
publication in a special issue of the Journal of Logic, Language and
    Computation.

There is a clear connection between probability and logic: both appear to
tell us how we should reason. But how, exactly, are the two concepts
related? Objective Bayesianism offers one answer to this question. According
to objective Bayesianism, probability generalises deductive logic: deductive
logic tells us which conclusions are certain, given a set of premises, while
probability tells us the extent to which one should believe a conclusion,
given the premises (certain conclusions being awarded full degree of
belief). According to objective Bayesianism, the premises objectively (i.e.
uniquely) determine the degree to which one should believe a conclusion.

The aim of this workshop is to explore the connections between probability
and logic, and in particular to evaluate aspects of the connection forged by
objective Bayesianism. The workshop is intended to be interdisciplinary: the
themes of the workshop are relevant to mathematicians, logicians,
philosophers, computer scientists, psychologists and engineers, for example.

  11. June 28, 2004 - DeGroot Prize

The 2004 winner of the DeGroot Prize is The Bayesian Choice: From Decision-Theoretic Foundations to Computational Implementation (2nd edition) by Christian P. Robert, and published by Springer-Verlag in 2001. Prize winners receive a plaque and a check for $1,500. The winner was announced on May 27 at the ISBA 2004 banquet in Viña Del Mar, Chile.

Robert's book was selected from 22 stellar submissions; the entries represented the full spectrum of topics in statistical science including introductions to probability and statistics (Bayesian and non-Bayesian), historical books, non-Bayesian methods, through to applications of Bayesian methods in astrophysics, biology, data mining, finance, and risk assessment. The selection committee believes that Robert's book sets a new standard for modern textbooks dealing with Bayesian methods, especially those using MCMC techniques, and that it is a worthy successor to DeGroot's and Berger's earlier texts.

The members of the selection committee were: Kathryn Chaloner, Stephen Fienberg (chair), Ed George, Steffen Lauritzen, and Sylvia Richardson.

  41. October 14, 2001 - The DeGroot Prize: Call For Entries

The DeGroot Prize, established in 2000, will be awarded in recognition of a published book in statistical science.  The Prize is intended to recognize a book addressing fundamental issues of statistical inference, decision theory and/or statistical applications, and including teaching texts at any level.  Books nominated for the Prize will be judged on the extent to which they represent important, timely, thorough, and notably original contributions to the statistics literature.  For additional information on the prize and the selection  process, see http://www.bayesian.org/awards/awards.html.

The DeGroot Prize is named for Morris ("Morrie") H. DeGroot, and recognizes the impact and importance of his work in statistics and decision theory, especially in the form of monographs and textbooks, and his marked influence on the evolution of the discipline over several decades through his personal scholarship, educational, and professional leadership. Additional background on Morrie DeGroot is  include at the end of this call for entries.

The Prize is administered by the International Society for Bayesian Analysis and consists of $1500 and a plaque.  The Prize is awarded every two years; the first DeGroot Prize will be awarded at the Seventh Valencia International Meeting on Bayesian Statistics in June of 2002. Nominations for this first award must be received by December 31, 2001.

Only books published between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2000 are eligible for consideration for the prize this year.  There is no restriction on publisher or country of publication. Books authored or co-authored by members of the selection committee are ineligible for consideration.

Instructions for submitting a nomination can be obtained from the chair of the selection committee:

    Professor Stephen E. Fienberg
    Department of Statistics
    Carnegie Mellon University
    Pittsburgh, Pa  15213
    fienberg@stat.cmu.edu

    Morris ("Morrie") H. DeGroot

Morris ("Morrie") H. DeGroot was born on June 8, 1931 in Scranton,Pennsylvania. He graduated from Roosevelt University in mathematics, and then studied statistics at the University of Chicago. He came to Carnegie Mellon in 1957 and was appointed founding Head of the Department of Statistics in 1966. Morrie spent the rest of his career as a member of the department. He  died on November 2, 1989.

Morrie led an unusually active and productive academic life. He wrote three books, edited four volumes (three as a member of the Valencia Meeting organizing committee), and authored over one hundred papers. He served as Theory and Methods Editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association, and was the recipient of several awards. But Morrie's influence in statistics went far beyond what any list of accomplishments and recognitions might indicate.

All who came in contact with Morrie were affected not only by his wisdom and the force of his arguments, but also by his diligence, thoroughness, integrity and good humor. His quick wit could equally well deliver an illuminating insight or a well-timed joke. He was greatly admired and respected within the profession, and many who worked with him or studied under his guidance were inspired by hiis ingenious, imaginative, persistent and passionate intellect.

Morrie's book, Optimal Statistical Decisions, helped educate a generation of statisticians and is one of the great books in the field. Published in 1970 and subsequently translated into both Russian and Polish, it provided an elegant and comprehensive treatment of a subject that has since come to be recognized as an essential part of statistics and of science as a whole. In 1975, his undergraduate text Probability and Statistics was published. A model of what a textbook should be, it played an important role in mathematical statistics curricula throughout the country.  These books served as the inspiration for the creation of the DeGroot Prize.

The Conference will be preceded by a one-day postgraduate tutorial seminar on "Basic Concepts in Bayesian Statistics". This will consist of five 90 minute lectures given by members of the Organizing Committee.

Delegates will be expected to arrive on the afternoon/evening of Saturday June 1st, (opening ceremony Sunday morning) and leave on the morning of Friday June 7th (farewell dinner Thursday night). The closest international airport is the Reina Sofia Tenerife Sur airport (TFS), only 10 minutes drive away. This is well connected to the Spanish mainland and to many European cities, and has scheduled flights to some American airports, such as Caracas or Buenos Aires. Early booking is advised. Transportation between TFS airport and the conference venue will be provided. Note that there is a second, smaller, airport north of the island, the Los Rodeos Tenerife Norte airport (TFN); this is about 50 km north of the conference venue. Transportation to/from Tenerife North will not be provided.

The registration fee (which will include transportation to/from Tenerife South airport, the farewell dinner, and several other items) will be about 200/100 EUR for delegates/accompanying persons. The accommodation cost for the full period, including breakfast and dinner (with wine), but no lunch, will be about 850/620 EUR on single/double room occupancy basis (at present time, 1 EUR =0.86 US$). Final costings will depend on the outcome of negotiations with sponsors, now under progress. Registration forms will be posted on the conference web page by the end of August.

The organizing committee will shortly be submitting grant proposals for travel support for junior researchers and colleagues from developing countries. Application forms for financial support will eventually be posted on the conference web page.

  57. February 8, 2001 - The Eighth Latin American Conference on Probability and Statistics

This conference will be held in the University of La Habana, Cuba, on November 12-16, 2001.

For more information about the conference, please visit the website, or contact Gonzalo Perera, the Chair of the Program Committee at gperera@fing.edu.uy, or Pablo Olivares, Chair of the Local Organizing Committee at clapem@matcom.uh.cu. Except for some of the icons on the home page, the rest of the web site is written in English.

As in the past, we are soliciting travel funds from various US funding agencies. Conditional on availability of funds, we will announce a competition for travel grants for young researchers and advanced graduate students. The competition will be announced within the next two months.

Anyone interested in submitting a contributed paper is encouraged to do so. Because travel to Cuba from the United States is somewhat restricted, those interested in participating in the conference should make travel arrangements with sufficient advance time. Travelers must request a license from the Department of the Treasury for travel to Cuba for the purpose of participating in a conference. Furthermore, a visa from the Cuban pseudo-embassy in Washington is also required. These requirements apply only to travelers from the United States. Those of you traveling from other countries (and with passports issued by other countries!) are likely to encounter significantly fewer hoops to jump through.

For information on how to obtain the license and the visa, please refer to the AAAS website http://shr.aaas.org/rtt/. Instructions written in English for humans (as opposed to official English) and that are easy to follow contain all pertinent information. Again, this applies to those of us residing in the U.S.

Please feel free to contact any of the organizers or myself for additional information. Hope to see lots of you in Cuba this November.

  58. January 25, 2001 - Two New Prizes in Statistical Science

A consortium of statistical organisations has established two new professional prizes: the DeGroot Prize and the Lindley Prize, honouring the eminent statisticians Morris H. DeGroot and Dennis Lindley.

The Lindley Prize will be awarded for innovative research in Bayesian Statistics that is accepted for publication as a contributed paper in the refereed proceedings of the Valencia and ISBA international meetings. Award winning papers will present research in Bayesian statistics that is is judged important, timely and notably original; truly innovative work will be judged more highly than successful development of ideas previously exposed. The Lindley Prize may be awarded for work in foundations, theory, methodology and applications of Bayesian statistics.

The DeGroot Prize will be awarded in recognition of a published book in statistical science. Candidates for the DeGroot Prize will be judged on the extent to which the book represents an important, timely, thorough and notably original contribution to the statistics literature, whether textbook or monograph. The DeGroot Prize may be awarded for a book addressing fundamental issues of statistical inference, decision theory and/or statistical applications, and including teaching texts at any level.

Each of the prizes consists of an award of $1500 and a commemorative plaque and is awarded biennially. The first DeGroot Prize will be awarded following the competition in 2001. The first Lindley Prize will be awarded following the competition based on contributed papers in the proceedings of the 7th Valencia International Meeting on Bayesian Statistics, to be held in Spain in 2002.

The International Society for Bayesian Analysis (ISBA), one of the founder organisations, has assumed responsibility for the management and administration of the two awards.

Full details of the two prizes, including the governing charters and the list of founding organisations, can be found at the ISBA website: http://www.bayesian.org/awards/awards.html

  60. December 6, 2000 - Call for Papers for ASA meeting in Atlanta

Call for Topic Contributed Sessions by Robert Weiss, 2001 Program Chair

It is already time to start thinking about the August 5-9 2001 Joint Statistical Meetings that will take place in Atlanta, GA. Let's make this a good conference for Bayesians. The best way to do this is for many of us to organize topic contributed sessions. Anyone may organize a session. Topic contributed sessions consist of 5 speakers, or 4 speakers and a discussant on some theme. The organizer arranges for speakers and titles and the session chair (often the organizer). Organizers may speak in their own session. All speakers must register for the meetings prior to February 1, 2001. Speakers are allowed to give only one talk or discussion, whether invited, topic contributed or regular contributed.

If you do not arrange for a topic contributed session, and contribute your talk in the usual way, you will end up in a regular contributed session. Topic contributed sessions are much better than regular contributed sessions because each speaker gets 20 minutes instead of 15 minutes, there are 5 speakers instead of as many as 7 in the session, the topics are typically closer together in subject, and attendance is usually higher.

You may contact me, Robert Weiss at robweiss@ucla.edu with any questions or suggestions. Visit the section website at

    http://www.stat.ucla.edu/~jsanchez/sbssnews/sbssnews.html

    for updates.

  61. December 6, 2000 - Student Travel Award 2001 Joint Statistical Meetings in Atlanta

    Robert Weiss 2001 Program Chair

This is a call to students who would like to be considered for partial funding to the 2001 JSM in Atlanta. The Section on Bayesian Statistical Science (SBSS) will consider funding students who wish to present Bayesian papers at the 2001 JSM in Atlanta. Criteria for funding are (i) Student is presenting a talk with Bayesian content at the Atlanta Meetings or has organized a Topic Contributed Session of such talks under the aegis of the SBSS. Savage Award finalists are obviously included. Other applications will be considered on a case by case basis. and (ii) Student is a current member of either SBSS or ISBA (International Society for Bayesian Analysis) [Student may apply for membership at the time of application and can then be funded upon proof of membership and submission of travel receipts to the SBSS treasurer after the meeting]. Both criteria must be satisfied. Each application should include brief information about the applicant including: (i) name, (ii) mailing address and email address, (iii) institution and program affiliation, (iv) number of years in program (v) thesis topic, (vi) name of major professor, (vii) title and abstract of the talk to be presented and (viii) itemization of approximate hotel and transportation expenses.

At JSM 2000 we funded all 10 applicants who met the above requirements. Each received up to $300. The awardees were:

    * Zhen Chen, Dept. of Statistics, U. of Connecticut
    * Sandip Sinharay, Dept. of Statistics, Iowa State
    * Alexandra M.Schmidt, Dept. of Probability and Statistics, U. of Sheffield
    * Athanasios Kottas, Dept of Statistics, U. of Connecticut
    * Russell Steele, Dept. of Statistics, U. of Washington
    * Ilaria DiMatteo, Dept. of Statistics, Carnegie Mellon University
    * Raquel Prado, Institute of Statistics and Decision Sciences , Duke University
    * Scott Schmidler, Dept. of Statistics, Stanford University
    * Suman Bhattacharya, Dept. of Biostatistics, UCLA
    * Jennifer L. Hill, Dept. of Statistics, Harvard University

This year is expected to be similar, but the final allocation has not been determined. Since limited funds are available, it is possible that SBSS will not be able to fund all requests.

The deadline for RECEIPT of applications is Feb 1, 2001 . Applications should be emailed to the 2001 SBSS Program Chair, Professor Robert Weiss (robweiss@ucla.edu). Appropriate applications after that time will be considered in the order received and on a funding available basis.

    Visit the section website at

    http://www.stat.ucla.edu/~ jsanchez/sbssnews/sbssnews.html

    for updates.
